The Milch Bride Texas is a harsh land in the 1870’s. Jackson Harper loses his wife after childbirth, but is not willing to lose his son. When the baby sickens, he must find a woman to nurse the boy. Unfortunately, the only woman in the county with milk is Hattie Stoddard, the town slut. Despite the protests of his in-laws and housekeeper, Jackson leaves his wife’s funeral to bring Hattie home. Hattie Stoddard has been a victim of a brutal rape and seen her father beaten and changed forever. By the time she can ride for help, the men who attacked her have told a different story of what happened and the town refuses to believe her. Pregnant and ostracized, she is determined to save her father and the ranch. Then her father and son die. When Jackson arrives she has nothing left but her shredded pride and the determination not to lose the land. When Jackson tells her she is going with him, she refuses. Finally they strike a bargain, he will pay the taxes and save the ranch if she will nurse and care for his son until J.D. is weaned. But a lot can happen in the milk-year.

Bought this story yesterday and just finished it. I have never read this author before. It is basically about a woman who becomes a wet nurse for a man's baby whose wife just died. The man, Jackson, wants to save his son and the baby is only a couple of days old. Hattie goes to live with Jackson and take care of his son. She has been raped and her baby died. Her father has also been killed. The town people chose to believe that she is a bad woman and so have shunned her. The author does an amazing job of describing life in detail on what it would have been like to live in those times. The main characters, Jackson and Hattie, are survivors despite having to survive some difficult things. Hattie is a hard worker and takes good care of baby J D who is so cute in this story. Just the details of how she had to change the baby's diapers because they didn't have leak proof disposable diapers is interesting. I think that the author must have done quite a bit of research into the history and life of that time period which is Texas 1870s. I would recommend this book to someone who likes a good historical romance but also likes to see characters who overcome their situation and become better for it. The interaction between the characters is interesting. Not everyone at the farm embraces Hattie and treats her right. It is realistic because these are real human beings who have ups and downs and yet learn and grow together. There is also suspense and some mystery to the story.

Heart-aching, unfair treatment of a poor woman and her father by rabid saddle bums hired by a good citizen of the town. Desperation calls for the desperate action to hire/ force her to give her breast milk to his starving newborn in return for her eventual independence. Living in close quarters forges a sexual tension easily noticed by others causing them to marry to stop the gossip. Instead, they find love.
If you enjoy western historical romances you must read the Western Wives novels. J.R. Biery has the writing ability to put you right there with the characters feeling what they feel. Her writing is historically accurate and her knowledge of country life made me think she writes from personal experience. Beautiful, poignant and a must read
I really liked this book, so much so I immediately ordered the other books in the Western Wives series
....I then ordered them in paperback thru for my sister's birthday, and after finishing the Milch Bride, she called me to thank me and to say she was passing (rather lending) it to members of her reading group! Ms. Biery the author is a find. Looking forward to her Appalachian Women series. The author took a story about a young women gang-raped on the orders of a corrupt man who wanted her land, then ostracized and victimized by the town's people, but ultimately triumphs thru guts, initiative, a spine of steel, and the proverbial good man, was a smacking good read.
An entertaining story with believable characters. As I read a book a day, there are soooooo many that I start and cannot finish because of storyline, childish characters, and, repetitive sex scenes that have absolutely NOTHING to do with the story. So, if you want a great book to read, this is it!!!!!!
The first time I've read anything by this author, and I have to say I sure hope there is alot more books! I've read quite a few bride stories and this one has to be one of the very best! Most reviews seem to go into a lot of detail, almost writing the whole story. I never could do that as I'm not much of a typist. Plus I feel it's the authors job. But on the other hand there are alot of books I wouldn't have purchased if other people hadn't written such good reviews! Lol. I can say about this book... There is alot of danger, suspense, love, human kindness and laughter. Lots of laughter, especially when you read antics concerning baby J.D. or Jackie. He seems to be the cutest little boy! And food! I spent half my time hungry after reading what Hattie was cooking next! Yum! And Jackson seems to be the perfect hero to pick up the pieces after Hattie was attacked and an unique way of keeping her safe thereafter. I tell you folks, this is just a real good story and I highly recommend it! This is one bride book you don't want to miss reading!
Hattie Stoddard Lost her Father and Baby within a day of each other.

Jackson Harper's Wife Donna died shortly after giving birth to their Son Jackson Dawson Harper (AKA J.D.).

JD was not able to keep down cow milk, canned milk etc and the Doctor recommended that he needed a wet nurse. As the baby was getting weaker and weaker Jackson decided the best solution was Hattie Stoddard.

However, Hattie has a bad reputation as a town whore and having a baby out of wedlock. Jackson only cares about his son and makes a deal with Hattie that he would pay the taxes on her ranch in exchange for her wet nursing his son till he is weaned.

This story flows well, the characters are well developed. Its a clean western romance filled with cattle rustlers, bad mean, greed, a sweet baby, and a great romance.
I truly enjoyed reading The Milch Bride. I had never read anything by Ms. Biery and I was very impressed after reading this book. I love her characters they seem to come alive on the page. If you are looking for a formula book this is not it. If you are looking for a book where you actually can feel what the characters are going through this is the book. After reading this book I went on to read From Darkness to Glory (another Ms. Biery book) and I liked even more. She is a wonderful writer and I can hardly wait to read her new book Valley of Shadows when it comes out on January 15th.
