A mathematician with great promise suffers a manic breakdown in Denmark while giving a series of lectures. Sixteen years later he has withdrawn from the academic community. He can't sleep, his mind races, he can't concentrate, he can't read. He writes obsessively and believes that catching his every thought is worth preserving, unedited. He believes that holding himself in a state just below full blown mania will help him to be insightful and creative so that he can work out his Great Project... understanding the mind of God, and solving for the problem of the human condition. (The answer is "Love One Another.") This reader's solution to the author's problem is "Take care of yourself."
This book is a raw and honest account of a mathematicians struggles to understand the meaning of a spiritual experience (hearing the voice of God) as he works to understand the realities of the physical universe (in the field of String Theory). While he relives aspects of what was a manic episode many years before he shares his thoughts and feelings with the reader. As he goes through daily chores and relationships as a caring father, husband and son, the reader joins him on this very personal journey. This book is not for everyone but is a must read for scientists who have also struggled with reconciling their search to reach the highest levels of knowledge with strong spiritual feelings and experiences. It may be uncomfortable for those who would rather hide from understanding the psychosocial and spiritual implication of scientific work. For those in the field of psychology it offers a fascinating view of how a spiritual experiences, whatever the cause, impacts one's life.
Its openness challenges the reader to be more aware of who they are, by how they choose to react to the book.
I write comments in social media very seldom only if I'm extraordinarily upset, extraordinarily moved, or when someone else's comment does great injustice to the subject. This is the case of the latter two. Review by collegegroves left me baffled. All the main points of the book are very accurately noted, but the conclusion and the rating are so inconsistent with the observations that it makes me wonder whether the reviewer had an agenda. The book is, yes, an account of the author's great inner torment that will resonate with many people, and first and foremost scientists, who struggle with the question of meaning -- of life, universe, and everything. And it goes deep and deeper, and off the deep end; the author's concern for humanity and the human condition is profound and genuine. Amidst his personal physical and mental struggles and unresolved questions and relationships, he cares about the mankind more than most of us, and that moves. Collegegroves mocks the author by trivializing and giving away the solution to the human condition; he then patronizes the author by telling him to stop writing and instead take care of himself. Well... THIS reader's suggestion (who am I to claim having solutions??) to the author's struggles is please keep writing, I'd love to read more by you.
